Health

Good health is a basic right, not a privilege. Through AMEXCAN’s health initiatives, we work to increase positive health outcomes for Latino families across North Carolina by improving access to information, services, and trusted community networks. From health fairs and training sessions to farmworker support and mobile resources, we bring care closer to the people who need it most.
Health care shouldn’t depend on your zip code, language, or status.

Health Programs

Unidos por Nuestra Salud

Unidos por Nuestra Salud is a community-led health initiative designed to help Latine families access reliable information, preventative care, and local services without confusion or stigma. The program focuses on meeting people where they are—through workshops, resource navigation, and outreach at schools, community events, and partner sites—so families can understand their options and take action early. Materials and support are offered in Spanish and English, with an emphasis on culturally responsive care and practical next steps.

Through Unidos por Nuestra Salud, participants can receive help with basic health screenings and referrals, guidance on finding a primary care provider, and support navigating insurance and low-cost care options. The program also promotes wellness through education on topics like nutrition, mental health, chronic disease prevention, and family health routines. By partnering with clinics and trusted community organizations, Unidos por Nuestra Salud builds a stronger network of support—so families feel informed, respected, and empowered to advocate for their health.

Health Fairs

AMEXCAN organizes health fairs, informational talks, and training sessions to connect Latino families with preventive care and reliable health education. These events offer screenings, vaccine information, workshops on chronic disease prevention, mental health, nutrition, and more—always in a welcoming, bilingual environment.

Participants leave with practical tools, referrals to local providers, and a better understanding of how to navigate the health system for themselves and their families.

NC Farm Workers Resource Network

The NC Latino Farmworker Network brings together organizations and allies dedicated to improving the welfare of farmers, farmworkers, farm labor contractors, and their families across North Carolina. Through health education, outreach, and coordinated support, the network works to address the unique risks faced by agricultural workers—long hours, exposure to heat and chemicals, housing challenges, and limited access to care.

AMEXCAN plays an active role in this network, helping ensure that farmworker voices guide the programs and policies meant to serve them.

We connect families to trusted resources, culturally grounded education, and pathways to care—especially when language, cost, or access create barriers. Through partnerships and community-led outreach, we help people navigate services and take the next step toward healthier lives.

Our Approach on Health

Our health work is grounded in collaboration and culturally competent care. We partner with clinics, hospitals, universities, and grassroots organizations to share clear, accurate information in Spanish and English, and to reduce fear and confusion around the health system.

We meet people where they are—on farms, in churches, community centers, and neighborhood events—offering screenings, education, and referrals in trusted community spaces. By coordinating efforts among alliance members and lifting up the voices of farmworkers, families, and youth, we help transform isolated services into a connected network that truly serves Latino communities across North Carolina and Mexico.

Maria Camila Vera Cepeda
Health and Economic Development Coordinator
Many of our neighbors navigate health, legal, and school systems in a language that is not their own. My work is to turn complicated information into clear options, and to do it with warmth. When people leave our events feeling informed and less afraid, I know we are doing something right.
Maria Camila Vera Cepeda
Health and Economic Development Coordinator
Reunifying families after twenty years apart is hard, detailed work—paperwork, appointments, logistics—but behind every form there is a story of love and survival. Watching parents embrace their children again reminds me why binational organizing matters and why every small step in the process counts.
Maria Elizabeth Medina-Kremer
Co-Executive Director
What moves me about AMEXCAN is how we refuse to choose between roots and future. We honor our traditions, language, and culture while building real pathways to education, health, and civic power. My work is to help families feel that North Carolina is home without ever losing who they are.
Rodrigo Efraín Hernández Hebrard
Binational Director of Communication and Public Relations
When a parent understands their rights at school or a farmworker gets connected to care, that moment changes more than one life. It sends a message that our community matters. I see leadership not as a position, but as the daily practice of standing up for each other.
Rodolfo Martinez Barron
Director of Advocacy & Civic Leadership
Every program we run starts with a simple question: what would make life more dignified for our community right now? From health clinics to voter outreach to binational work in Mexico, my job is to listen, remove barriers, and make sure people feel seen, respected, and accompanied.
Bianca Samantha Perez
Director of Community and Cultural Affairs
