Advocacy and Civic Engagement

AMEXCAN works to ensure Latinos in North Carolina have equal access to opportunity and representation in government, law, and civic life. Through voter engagement, policy advocacy, legal education, and consular support, we help our communities understand their rights, make informed decisions, and participate fully in the democratic process.
Our comunidad is not a statistic — it’s a voting bloc.

Our Approach

We believe advocacy starts with people, not policy. Our work is grounded in listening to the community, building trust, and then turning that trust into collective action.

AMEXCAN’s approach combines education, accompaniment, and direct access:

  • We educate our community about their rights, the democratic process, and the laws that impact their daily lives.
  • We accompany families and individuals through workshops, referrals, and one-on-one support so they never navigate complex systems alone.
  • We bring institutions closer to the people — from elected officials to legal professionals and consular services — reducing barriers of language, distance, and fear.

By weaving these pieces together, we help our community move from being informed observers to active participants shaping policy, defending their rights, and building a more just North Carolina.

Advocacy and Civic Engagement Programs

Referral Program

AMEXCAN’s Referral Program connects individuals and families with trusted agencies and organizations that can best respond to their needs. From legal assistance and health services to education and social support, our team helps community members navigate options and understand where to go for help.

We prioritize services that are free or low-cost, culturally rooted, and available in Spanish and English. Our goal is to ensure that no one is left alone when facing complex systems, and that every person can access support in a respectful, welcoming environment.

Legal Academy Workshop

Our Legal Academy Workshops offer clear, practical information on legal issues that directly affect Latino and Hispanic families in North Carolina. Topics include immigration, workers’ rights, housing, family law, and more—always presented in accessible language and with space for questions.

Each session provides guidance, printed or digital resources, and referrals to trusted legal professionals when additional support is needed. Through these workshops, we help participants understand their rights, identify risks, and make informed decisions for themselves and their families.

Advocacy

Through our advocacy work, AMEXCAN helps community members build power and influence the decisions that affect their lives. We facilitate meetings between residents and elected officials, organize town halls and community forums, and support participation in hearings and actions at the local and state levels.

A key focus of this work is resisting anti-immigrant legislation and advancing policies that protect the dignity and rights of migrant families. By lifting up community voices—in the Capitol, online, and in local spaces—we strive to ensure that Latinx communities are not only present in the conversation, but shaping it.

Mi Voto Cuenta

Mi Voto Cuenta is AMEXCAN’s voter engagement initiative, created to increase Latinx voter registration and turnout across North Carolina, with a special focus on Eastern North Carolina. We provide nonpartisan information about how, when, and where to vote; support first-time voters; and help community members understand what is at stake in each election.

Through voter education workshops, canvassing, phone and text outreach, and collaboration with local partners, Mi Voto Cuenta empowers our community to participate fully in the democratic process. When our people vote, our priorities—and our families—are better represented.

Consulado Sobre Ruedas

For more than 10 years, AMEXCAN has partnered with the Consulate General of Mexico in Raleigh to bring Consulados Sobre Ruedas (Mobile Consulates) and dual-nationality days to Eastern North Carolina, especially in Greenville and Wilson. These mobile visits offer passports, consular IDs, civil registry services, and legal orientation directly in the communities where people live.

Each Consulado Sobre Ruedas serves up to 1,500 people, with hundreds completing essential documentation without needing to travel long distances. By bringing consular services closer, we reduce costs, transportation barriers, and confusion—making it easier for Mexican nationals to stay informed, protected, and connected to both countries.

Reunifying families after twenty years apart is hard, detailed work—paperwork, appointments, logistics—but behind every form there is a story of love and survival. Watching parents embrace their children again reminds me why binational organizing matters and why every small step in the process counts.
