AMEXCAN expresses deep indignation and rejection of a 6–3 U.S. Supreme Court decision that eliminates federal restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, which had prohibited detaining people based solely on appearance, language, or type of employment. The organization warns that this ruling paves the way for mass raids focused on people who “look Latino,” speak Spanish, or work in low-wage jobs, reinforcing an intolerable pattern of racial and social discrimination against Latino individuals and families who are simply carrying out their daily lives.
The statement highlights the grave constitutional implications raised in Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s dissent, noting that the decision ignores essential guarantees, weakens the standard of reasonable suspicion, and undermines protections against arbitrary detention. AMEXCAN also warns of broader institutional and social risks, as the ruling could encourage similar raids and racially profiled enforcement campaigns in other cities and regions, including North Carolina, eroding trust in public institutions among minority communities. The organization calls on authorities, civil society, and community organizations to defend human rights, resist discriminatory practices, and stand in solidarity with those most affected.
