Part of the mission of the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina (AMEXCAN) is to advocate for access to health services and to promote education around health-related topics, with the purpose of contributing to the reduction and prevention of diseases which affect members of our community, and people in general regardless of their immigration status, sex, nationality, or sexual orientation. AMEXCAN has taken up the task of forming partnerships with different institutions and health centers dedicated to health education and screening. AMEXCAN has been carrying out this work since the organization was formed, but in the last three years the Association has taken a more active role in these initiatives. The Association not only invites institutions to participate in AMEXCAN’s activities. These institions have also invited AMEXCAN to join various groups that disseminate information on health-related topics. For example, AMEXCAN has been invited to:

1.-Promote and establish support groups in the fight against BREAST CANCER.

2.-Promote DIABETES prevention and form a group of health of promoters.

3.-Participate in meetings on the Latino initiative on HIV/AIDS in North Carolina.

4.-Take part in the National Summit group to DEVELOP A NATIONAL LATINO AGENDA OF ACTION AGAINST HIV/AIDS , in which more tan 250 community leaders, health departments, federal agencies, public health experts, and congressional leaders met to form a joint front to deal with the impact of, HIV/AIDS in Latino communities. This event was held in Washington.

As a non-profit organization, we should not forget about the health crisis that our Latino community in the United States confronts. Therefore, our job and what we strive for is to alleviate, educate, and prevent the spread of different diseases from which our people suffer with the objective of bettering our community’s health. We all should be more sensitive towards the diseases from which our community suffers. Real-life examples are:

BREAST CANCER

DIABETES

OBESITY

HIV/AIDS
